In chapter six of The Chosen, Reuven gets a history lesson about the Saunders from his dad, Mr.Malter. In the history lesson that was told, it spoke of Jews that were persecuted in European countries other than Poland, where Jews were accepted. There was a ten year revolution in Poland that was led by Bogdan Chmienicki, during the revolution many Jews were assassinated. A vast number of Jews stopped believing in god, while others stayed faithful praying that the messiah would save them from the revolution. Meanwhile Reuven learned of a man named Solomon who was never satisfied with the Talmud. At the age of twenty five Solomon deserted his family to explore his hunger for knowledge. At the age of fourty seven Solomon died a lonely man. Mr. Malter finished the history lesson with the quote, "We only find a mind like Danny's once in a lifetime and a mind like that shouldn't go to waste." Mr. Malter told Reuven that Danny was in need of a good friend, so the incident which occured during the baseball game shouldn't interfere. Reuven's dad doesn't want Danny to end up lonely like Solomon.
