This book is really testing Santiago's moral and physical strength. Due to the fact that he been lost at sea for many days and the marlin is not giving up. He keeps talking to nature and wishing upon the boy was their to help him. I believe he use these references to help keep his moral one, and it shows how patinet he is about nature. If he don't catch the fish I believe he will be so maraly drain that he will not come back home and drift off and dye at sea.
