A biblical reference in "Barn Burning" is when the Black man told him "Wood and hay will burn". In Genesis, two angels went to a city called Sodom to warn a man that the city would be destroyed. The man escaped and the city was destroyed with fire. In "Barn Burning" the stock get out but the barn is still destroyed with fire. Technically this is late but the week is not over yet because is Saturday...

The Stolen Party

In the short story "The Stolen Party," some people may think that Luciana, the birthday girl, had her party taken away from her or "stolen" by Rosaura. Some may assume this because Rosaura has fun and helps out alot at the party, but Rosaura is really the one who gets the party taken away from her. Rosaura is so happy of how the party turns out because she got to hold the magician's assistant, the monkey, and she gets to help serve cake. Rosaura does not feel the same way when she is with her mother at Senora Ines's door, and expects to get a bracelet out of the pink bag, even though she wants a yo-yo out the blue bag, but Senora Ines hands her two bills. Senora Ines pays Rosaura for helping out at the party. Rosaura was considered the help just like her mother. Rosaura has had the party "stolen" from her because Senora Ines's actions to give her those bills, makes Rosaura feel that all the fun she had just experienced, was all for nothing if she was going to be treated unlike all the other kids and taken as the help.

The Minister's Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Minister's Black Veil is about Mr.Hooper, a minister that wears a black veil for "mourning". Many of the townspeople believe that Mr.Hooper wears the veil because he committed a sin but they do not know what the sin is. The sin that Mr.Hooper committed is adultery. On page three during a funeral for a young woman he could not look at the deceased parishioner for unknown reasons. The reason Mr.Hooper could not give the young woman eye contact was because he had an extra-marital relationship with the young woman. Mr Hooper couldn't tell his fiancee why he wore the veil, possibly out of shame. Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of Scarlet Letter which is about an adulteress who has to wear a scarlet A to mark her shame. The character's name is Hester and her husband seeks revenge.

Babylon Revisited

Reading this book was very difficult, because the author did not really tell us when the story was transitioning.

Babylon Revisited By, F.Scott Fitzgerald

Charlie wanted his daughter back. He lost his daughter because his wife died and he became a drunk. Charlie took his daughter out to dinner so he could bound with her. She told him that she wanted to live with him. Also, he started to argue with Marion over how he should get his daughter and how he improved over the years. He only has one drink a day and he tried to stay on top of it.

The Old Man In The Sea

This book is really testing Santiago's moral and physical strength. Due to the fact that he been lost at sea for many days and the marlin is not giving up. He keeps talking to nature and wishing upon the boy was their to help him. I believe he use these references to help keep his moral one, and it shows how patinet he is about nature. If he don't catch the fish I believe he will be so maraly drain that he will not come back home and drift off and dye at sea.

The Monkeys Paw

In the short story "The Monkeys Paw," I chose consequences, nothing worth hearing, and three wishes to indicate the importance of the paw. I chose consequences because once you use the paw a consequence will eventually happen. In the text it says, "If you keep it, do not blame me for what happens," says Morris. He says this because he already had his three wishes and knows what will eventually happen. I chose nothing worth hearing because this shows that the paw is nothing to talk about because of the consequences that could happen, while using it. Finally, to show what the paw is used for I chose three wishes because this tells the person who is using the paw that they only have three wishes. These are three reasons that indicate the importance of the paw.

Last thought on TOMANTS

The sharks might be a symbol for science. The marlin is a Christ figure, and Christ belongs to religion. What is the thing that tries to destroys religion? Science. The sharks devoured the whole marlin as science constantly fights with religion. Hemingway was trying to portray this conflict. Notice that religion fought back because Santiago is also a Christ figure.

What's wrong with this old man santiago?

I understand how Santiago wants to prove to people that he can fish, but who the heck would stay out in the middle of the ocean for 3 to 4 days for their ambitions. It would have been smarter if he was fishing closer to the sea. He was not even prepared to stay that long out on sea. If I were him I would think ahead before I go and act. Think about what you would need to cook or harvest fish, weapons for shark attacks, and a first-aid kit just in case you get hurt. Other then that I liked his ambitions towards proving himself. He really had his mind set on the fish he wanted to catch he did not really care for himself. Well until his hand cramped and could barely catch the fish because of the pain.

The Old Man and the Sea

In the novela The Old Man and the Sea, some of the motifs are stregnth, rest, and eyes. The word stregnth and rest kept appearing in the novela when Santiago was fishing. The eyes motif was mostly present in the begining of the book before he went fishing. I thought the boy Manolin, represented luck because, he was not allowed to go fishing with the old man because his parents thought the old man was bad. His parents thought Santiago had bad luk because he was not catching any fish. If maolin's parents did not think the old man had bad luck then Manolin would still be fishing with the old man. Turns out, Manolin is a symbol of hope, because while the old man was out at sea he would constantly say, "I wish the boy were here".
