The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway

Pages 92-106 in The Old Man and the Sea Ernest Hemmingway revealed multiple sides of Santiago's personality. Santiago did not kill the fish to keep alive and to sell for food. Santiago killed the fish for pride because he is a fisherman. Pride often leads to a downfall in general (literature, and life.) Killing the fish out of pride was selfish and Santiago had to pay a price for his action. "But I have killed this fish which is my brother and now I must do the slave-work."(Hemingway 95). Santiago had a strong bond with the marlin but he killed him and now he is lonely. Santiago thought he could overpower nature by going far off into the sea to catch a fish. No other fishermen go as far as Santiago did to fish, especially not to fish for pride. Nature "sent"seven sharks that "killed" Santiago's pride, the fish. Although Santiago was overpowered by nature he continued to strive for what he wanted. This was a man vs. nature conflict. Santiago was destroyed not defeated because he lost his hope and pride and he challenged nature. Santiago's "Christ figures" can be rebuilt just as a destroyed building can be rebuilt. If Santiago was defeated he would not be able to rebuild his "Christ figures". The multiple sides of Santiago's personality we find are selfishness, guilt, doubt, hope, faith, and perseverance.
Santiago is a strong eighty-five year old ,an. He survived three or four whole days out in the sea fishing. He had to go through sharks biting at the fish he caught. I do not think that there is anybody who can make this man die. Also, he missed the boy so much. He finally learned who he is by being by himself

The Old Man & The Sea

The Old Man & The Sea has a powerful theme to it. enjoyed the book because the main character Santiago tries to find a fish that no one would accept him to find. During his journey at sea he runs into some trouble , but manage to face them. Many sharks tries to eat the fish , but Santiago does not stand a chance to let them get to it. The book proved me wrong because I thought the old man was going to die at sea , but he did not. The old man was loyal to the boy because he told the boy he was coming back and manage to do so.

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs

The Monkey's paw i s not a claw that creates horrible things. It is the people that makes the horrible things happen to them, because they are fillled with greed. The first thing the main character ,Mr.White, asked for was money, so the claw gave him money, but also took away someone he loved to teach a lesson. The claw is not intirely bad, it teaches a lesson, which is people should not be filled with greed when they have money.

In The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway Santiago went out to go catch a fish but he went to far away from land. He is in battle with fish and while he is in battle he starts to connect with the fish. The fish finally is caught and Santiago is exhsauted. Then a pack of sharks comes to eat the fish. The old man try to fight the sharks but they keep eating pieces of the fish. He really starts to miss Manolin and he kept wishing for him. A motif of this book is strength because Santiago really needed to be strong. Another motif is pride because one of the main reasons why Santiago caught the fish is because of his pride. When he goes back to Cuba he is injured and only the bones offish lasted.
The old man in the sea is about a old fisherman named Santiago who is not able to cacth a fish. He has been trying for 85 days but he has no luck. The old man do not have luck but he has hope and cofidence because he is not giving up. He gets his hope from a boy name Manolin which is Santiago appertince until his mother and father told Manolin to stay away from Santiago.

TOMATS

In the novella, The Old Man in the Sea, we can make assumptions that Santiago has a connection with nature that bonds the two of them together as family. "But I have killed this fish which is my brother and now I must do the slave work."(Hemingway 95). Here we see that Santiago refers to the fish as his brother so he definitely has a strong bond with the fish. "The old man hit him on the head for kindness and kicked him, his body still shuddering under the shade of the stern."(Hemingway 38). In this section of the book, Santiago is killing a fish out of necessity to survive. We know from this quote, that even though he is killing the fish he has sympathy for it and instead of letting the fish die slowly and painfully, he makes his death short and painless so the fish would not suffer. He kicks and hits the fish on the head out of his sympathy for him. (Hemingway 38). We know that Santiago has a special bond with the animals and on his way back from catching the marlin he has an interaction with a shark he describes as beautiful. The author can be confusing though, because with Santiago's interactions with the other sharks, he describes them to be "scavengers and killers" (Hemingway 108). We notice that Santiago's connection with nature and animals at this point may have changed due to a variety of factors. First of all ,Santiago is tired and has not had a good long rest in three days, we could also assume he is a little frustrated by the way things are going with the fish and how long they are taking, and also the fact that after all his hard work from catching the fish, he is being attacked by many sharks. We can infer that Santiago's faith and pride of catching the fish was lessened when his great, noble, fish was taken away from him.

Thought On The Old Man.

The old man's actions, words, and thoughts are very unique. He always is talking to himself. I do not think this does not mean he is delusional or going crazy. He is alone so this is his way of reflecting and thinking about what he is doing on the sea. He also is very precise about everything he does. Even thought he has probably done numerous times he still make sure he does it right by naming the steps in his heads. Also I think the Crist figure motif is valid. The most convincing one is the way his hands are briused. However there are others such as him being good with kids, very humble, etc. I am starting to wonder what happened to the "eyes" motif...

The Old Man And The Sea

The Old Man And The Sea is a novella with a very strong and confident main character. Though he does not believe in religion he is a Christ figure because, he is good with children, unmarried, spent time alone in the wilderness, and thinks the world is unworthy. Almost every creature he sees in the sea he labels them as, beautiful, strong and confident which shows that he is a caring and strong character himself. The thing that I would want to know is, why is he pushing himself so much?

The Old Man and The Sea

In The Old Man and The Sea, Santiago is becoming more independent. He is learning how to do things without the boy. "I wish I had the boy. But you haven't got the boy, he thought. You have only yourself and you had better work back to the last line now, in the dark, and cut it away and hook up the two reserve coils,"(Hemingway 51-52). He is finding his own inner strength*. Meanwhile, the old man is about to catch the fish after three long days. "I could not fail myself and die on a fish like this," (Hemingway 87). He is very determined to catch this fish. When he says, "a fish like this" the fish is special. It is not any ordinary fish.

*Coming back to strength, on page 81, Santiago talks about how he dreamed of lions. Lions symbolize strength,
and:
  • Courage
  • Power
  • Royalty
  • Dignity
  • Authority
  • Dominion
  • Justice
  • Wisdom
  • Ferocity
http://www.whats-your-sign.com/symbolic-meaning-of-lions.html

Santiago may not have all of these traits, but he has some...like courage, power, etc. Santiago has courage for being able to go out at sea for that long. He stayed out for days while not getting that much rest, not eating well and getting hurt. Exhaustion, starvation, and pain all caused him lots of suffering. Also Santiago has power because he was powerful enough to catch the fish. Not even just catch it, but emotionally he was powerful enough to shove the spear in the fishes heart, knowing that is his brother.

I am looking forward to see how Santiago's "quest" turns out.

The Old Man and The Sea

This story is about a man that went on shore trying to catch a fish. The Motif is strength, and courage. On pg 50 it says ".....settled himself against the rounded planks of the bow and felt the strength of the great fish through the line he held across his shoulders moving steadily toward whatever had chosen." He is feeling the power to do certain things. Everyday he is getting stronger and stronger because on pg 48 "...... rounded the planks of the bow and felt the strength of the great fish.... the line he had.... moving steadily toward whatever he had chosen." He keeps on feeling strength. He has courage because he knows that he can do it. On pg 50 it says "His choice had been to stay in the deep dark water far out beyond all snares and trap..."  also on page 54 it says ...But I will kill you dead before this day ends. These quotes are saying that his desire is to kill the fish and he will kill it no matter what he does.

Strength

A motif in TOMATS, is strength. An example of this is because the fish must be really strong to haul a boat. Another example can be seen when the old man says he has to eat the fish to stay strong. Finally fishing requires mental and physical strenght.

old man and the sea

This story is about an old man who has a love for the sea and he thinks he is born to do this. He has a boy to help him out. he is humble because he is poor and does not ask for anything an does not take things for greed.

The Old Man and The Sea

In the second set of pages(pg. 20-33), the old man showed how competitive he is. He has a strong opinion about the different baseball teams and who will win. Also the boy seems very determined. It seems as if he will not give up until what set out for is accomplished. That is a good trait to have.

Great Expectations

When reading the passage Great Expectations I found it very confusing. Words that I thought should not be in the same sentence as other words were, like on page 115 where it says, "It was in this place, and at this moment, that a stange thing happened to my fancy." What is a fancy? I really did not get what was being said, and I still don't. I also realize that starting from a random chapter is hard to do, because you may not know what is going on.

The Chosen Chapter twelve

Mr.Malter and Reb Saunders have different opinions on Palestine (what is now Israel) becoming the homeland for the non-gentiles. Mr.Malter believes that the Jews should take action because it is a waste of time to wait for god to save the them. Reb believes that letting gentiles build a homeland for the Jews that are left is committing apikorism. Reuven brought up the topic of the "new land" at dinner and Reb Saunders exploded like a volcano. Reuven felt the "heat" at the table between the family after the "new land incident." Now Reuven is careful about what he says in the Saunders' household.

The Chosen.

Who would of thought that Danny Saunders would be so cold hearted. Danny has a little brother that might be sick his whole life, but all Danny cares about is himself not becoming a rabbi. In chapter 12 of The Chosen, Danny said that he actually feels pity for his little brother, as he explains to Reuven that if he does not become a rabbi then his little brother could simply take fill in the slot of being a rabbi. Danny just does not have the guts to tell his father yet.

THE CHOSEN CHAPTER 12

This chapter is very surprising .Who would have thought a rabbi would be yelling at a teenager? The chapter started of good Danny and Rueven started hanging out again. It was as if their friendship was getting stronger.Ruevens father is in the hospital so he sees him n the afternoons with Danny .When they seen Mr.malter he had told them of the importance of palestine becoming the jewish homeland. They continued talking about the jewry then Rueven and Danny left. One morning during breakfast Rueven told Mr.Saunders that alot of people where now saying that it was time for palestine to become the jewish homeland.he yelled and asked Rueven who had said these things.Rueven just said apikorsims and goyim hidin the fact that it was his father who had said that.Mr.Saunders did not like hearing this because he did not like the fact that that land would be contaminated by jewish goyim.Mr.Saunders left .Then Danny took Rueven to his room and explained to Rueven that his father takes God and Torah seriousely ,he would die for them quite happily. From the on Rueven thought of what he was going to say toMr.Saunders before he said it.

The Chosen Chapter 12

It is unbelievebable how Reb Saunders reacted to Reuven's comment of the creation of a Jewish state (modern day Israel). It is just not expected from a quiet man to scream at a teeneger. There was a cliche' in this chapter, Reuven mentioning that Danny's sister is a pretty girl, and she already has to get married to someone else. It is just always there...

The Chosen heart disease

In chapter 11 of The Chosen Rueven's father had a heart attack which did not come as a surprise to the readers of this book. In the earlier chapters it said that he was coughing and sounded very sickly and then it stopped when Rueven came back home from the hospital. So he was already sick and building up to this heart attack.

Is Reb Saunders becoming sympathetic?

I find that Reb Saunders character changed since chapter eight. He is growing softer. Yet he still gives his son a challenge with memorizing verses from the Talmud. He cares about his son, he believes that his son is his most prized posetion, but Danny doesn't see it because Reb can't talk to his son. Why you ask, well that's a mystery that even I am trying to solve. But at the same time it will be a surprise when we find out later in the book why Reb Saunders cannot talk to his son. Danny doesn't have any conversations with his dad it seems like he is lonely. He believes that Reuven is lucky to be able to conversate with his dad, he thinks that Reuven doesn't know how good his life is. On the last page of chapter ten it discusses how Reuven's father had went into a heart attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital and Reb Saunders had called Reuven to ask him for the time being that his father is in the hospital he can live with his family.

Chapter 9- The Chosen

Chapter 9 was a very eventful chapter.
Though it was about 4 pages long it covered most of the things in Reuven's personal life including his doctor appointment. Danny could not read for a long time ,because his eye injury dealing with Danny but when the doctor told him he can read ,and basically become human again he got very happy. When he finally went back to school the first thing he read was his final exams and though he did not get allot of practice ,because of his eye he was still happy to read again. Reuven did not get to see Danny for that whole week ,but during his free time he decided to call Billy to find out that his surgery did not work which made him very sad. He then went out side and saw a struggling fly in a spider's web and freed it. He does this to help the fly who could not help himself, something he wish he did for Billy. These two things brings us back to the motif which is blind sight. Billy is blind and will mostly live blind ,and the fly was blind because he could not see his way out of the web ,but that time Reuven could actually help.

The Chosen Chapter 5

In the fifth chapter of the book The Chosen I see one of the motifs are stated once again. It was kind of weird when I was reading it because it was as if Reuven had loss of memory of something. Everything that he was describing was as if he was seeing it for the first time. For me, I felt that it was foreshadowing that a change in the story line or the plot was coming. I say this because in the text it was showing how Reuven was looking at everything from a different perspective and then at the end of the chapter it also said that he laid on the porch and began to think about Danny. Truly I think it was fate that Reuven ended up in the hospital because Danny said himself that if Reuven wasn't in the hospital Danny would have had no one to tell his secret to. His secret how he reads tons of books in secrecy because his father is very strict with what he reads. The part of the secret that really intrigued me was the fact that Reuven's father said that not only does Danny read the books fast but he also memorizes the books too. I find the conflict with himself maddening and so confusing, but I also feel that Reuven will take a huge part in whatever Danny chooses to do because they will be the best of friends, I think....

My Opinion of "Two Kinds"( revised)

The story of "Two Kinds" had some disrespectful characters who talked back to their parents. Everyone is their own person and should express themselves but at the same time, should respect their parents. The daughter felt she was not appreciated for who she really was,(which was not a piano player) by her mother. She was disrespectful and rude when she said"I wish I were dead! Like them."as she referred to her siblings who had died during birth. In the end of the story, she talked about the piano she had played as a child and how she felt proud to have it offered to her by her mother. " It made me feel proud as if it were a shiny trophy I had won back." she said. Her mother had died a few months earlier, and I would have expected her to feel guilty for never saying sorry to her mother for what had occurred. The incident that had taken place with her mother was not spoken of in years so she probably felt bringing it up would not benefit her or her mother in any way.
In chapter six of The Chosen, Reuven gets a history lesson about the Saunders from his dad, Mr.Malter. In the history lesson that was told, it spoke of Jews that were persecuted in European countries other than Poland, where Jews were accepted. There was a ten year revolution in Poland that was led by Bogdan Chmienicki, during the revolution many Jews were assassinated. A vast number of Jews stopped believing in god, while others stayed faithful praying that the messiah would save them from the revolution. Meanwhile Reuven learned of a man named Solomon who was never satisfied with the Talmud. At the age of twenty five Solomon deserted his family to explore his hunger for knowledge. At the age of fourty seven Solomon died a lonely man. Mr. Malter finished the history lesson with the quote, "We only find a mind like Danny's once in a lifetime and a mind like that shouldn't go to waste." Mr. Malter told Reuven that Danny was in need of a good friend, so the incident which occured during the baseball game shouldn't interfere. Reuven's dad doesn't want Danny to end up lonely like Solomon.

The Chosen(chapter five)

In this chapter, Reuven has just returned from the hospital. On his way home he literally sees things differently. He describes the scenery as bright, clean, and fresh. Figuratively speaking, I think Reuven also saw things differently such things as the relationship he had with Danny Saunders. When Danny first came to visit Reuven in the hospital, Reuven really did not want to hear from Danny because he was the one who put him in the hospital. He was the reason why Reuven could potentially become blind in one of his eyes. By the time Reuven was home Danny and Reuven had had other visits and were practically friends. I think the reason the two disliked each other before was because they did not know each other and also because they let their religion in a way come between them and interfere with their personalities. Reuven thought Danny would be some type of way because he was a Hasidim-Jew, but once he got to know him he was in no way (except the way he dressed) what Reuven thought he would be like.

-Eye Sight-

In chapter 5 I was understanding Reuvens new point of view(literally). Because, he was in the hospital for so long he labaled it as a dark place ,but it could also have a deeper meaning. When he was in the hospital he hated Danny but as he came out of the hospital he saw sunshine which shows his new found friendship with him. He started seeing things he never saw before because, he was using his eyes more seeing that he almost lost one of them and still could be in danger of losing one.

The Chosen Chp.4

Reuven was sick in the hospital . One day Reuven looked out of the window and realize how lucky people were to be walking and seeing. He said "I envy them being able to walk around like that. they don't know how lucky they are. "No one knows he is fortunate until becomes unfortunate" People do not know how lucky they are not to be caught up in any problems. Reuven sees the world differently then what everybody else sees Reuven had said "look at that. look at all those people. They look like ants. Sometimes i get the feeling that's all we are-ants. Do you ever feel that way?" Reuven sense curiosity.
-The Chosen-

The Chosen

In chapter 3 of The Chosen Reuven is still in the hospital because of the eye injury. Then his father had visted him in the hospital and had a converstation in the room. the motif of this chapter is that danny eye is messed up and they kkep on repeating s things that have to do wit his eye such as, blind, see, eye.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 was very suprising to me. It was very hard to believe that Rueven's dad knew Danny for so long and didn't tell anyone about it. When Reuven introduced his dad and Danny I understood why there was an awkward and almost scary silence. Danny was suprised and so was I. Chapter 4 had many suprises and was very suspenceful at times.

The Chosen Danny and Mr.Malter

A surprise in chapter 4 was when Danny learned that he already knew Rueven's father, Mr.Malter. Danny knew Mr.Malter from the library because Danny would sneek to the library to read books and Rueven's father would recomend and discuss books to him. They knew each other for a few months and did not know each others names. Mr.Malter asked the librarian what his name was and she knew because Danny had applied for a library card ,but was to afraid to pick it up.

Comments About "Two Kinds" and "The Chosen"

"Two Kinds" by Amy Tan was interesting because it had the message, "mothers are always right", and I can support this because in the text, the mother told the daughter she had a talent for piano even if she was not that good. After her mother died and she started playing the piano again, the text said it came easily to her. Now in The Chosen, it was shocking when Danny told Reuven he read Darwin. Is funny how Reb Saunders considers that anybody who reads Darwin is an Apikorsim yet he reads it in secret. It has a sense of hipocracy to it.

Chapter 4. !

THE CHOSEN

CHAPTER FOUR
Chapter four had an interesting twist .Rueven was at the hospital and had surprise visit from Danny. In chapter three Danny came to apologize to Rueven but Rueven didn't want to listen to Dannys apology. Instead of listening to Danny,Rueven just makes Danny feel worse about what he did to his eye and then tells Danny to leave so Danny listens. But Danny comes back to speak to Rueven they way it should have gone. They have a long conversation and then they start to understand each other. In chapter four Danny comes to visit Rueven again and when he comes He tells Rueven somethings nobody knows about him.He tells Danny all about his love about reading and they talk about Dannys decision about becoming a rabbi. Then Rueven gets another visitor ,his father comes, and Danny is completely shocked.Danny cant believe that the man who was recommending books to him in the library is Ruevens father.

The Chosen, mixed feelings:

In the book The Chosen Reuven is having mixed feelings about danny. I find this interesting because first he acts like their worst enemies then he acts like their the best of freinds. It's very intruiging . Now, REUVEN MAKE UP YOUR MIND! Pick one, Do you hate him? Or Do you like him? Cause i'm getting pretty agrivated about this situation it's confusing and complicated I liked pg.62 when reuven took out all his anger on danny and didn't feel any simpathy at first for him in the story it took me to a place in my childhood memories. It reminded me of the time i treated my brother badly for jumping on the swing before me which led to me falling. So, I had threatened him to get off but he didn't, so i decided to choose whether to hurt him Or to let him have his victory and laugh in my face so I did the right thing and hit him in the leg with a skateboard he fell to the ground screaming and I got to have the swing but i learned a lesson from this,"You can't always get what you want."

The Chosen (Chap.3)

Chapter 3 of The Chosen was very interesting to me. Danny's visit to Reuven was kind. Even though Danny told him he wanted to kill him, they worked it out. I liked how Danny and Reuven are starting to become friends. They solved their problems and told eachother how they felt. I think this is the beginning to a good (friend) relationship. Another thing I liked in chapter 3 is the characters in the hospital with Reuven. Mr. Savo was pretty active (even though he shouldn't have been) and his character was fun.

The Chosen

The Chosen
Chp3 The Chosen was about Reuven&&Danny Saunders. Danny went to visit Reuven at the hospital. He apologizes for trying to kill him and for getting him enjured. Reuven didnt want to listen to danny saunders and he just cussed him out.

What I think about The Chosen

I thought that Chapter 3 was better than the rest of the other chapters. I say this because I think that Danny and Reuven are going to become friends and set aside their differences. In the chapter Reuven said, "Please stop calling me Malter." and they had a debate, but it was a good debate. I think that Danny is changing from mean to a rbbi and that's good. I think that if Danny father was not in the book , Reuven would not be in the hospital. I say this because
Danny father challenge Danny to win the baseball gmae against Reuven's team. But i think that if Reuven would have duck and not tried to prove himself to Danny then this would have never happen.

Responce.!

In Chapter 3 of the book The Chosen when I read that Danny Saunders approach Reuven for the 2nd, I was shocked. I say this because the day before Danny Saunders had arrived, Reuven said, "For my part you can go to hell and take your whole snooty bunch of Hasidim along with you!" and Danny Saunders stood quiet and didn't move not one bit, until Reuven told him to. If I were Danny, knowing that Reuven had to let out all of that anger on me, I wouldn't have came back a second time to apology. This is why when Danny Saunders came to the hospital again to talk to Reuven I was shocked.

THE CHOSEN

THE MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE READ CHOSEN HAVE LOVED IT.THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SAYS "ANYONE WHO FINDS THE CHOSEN IS FINDING A JEWEK. ITS THEMES ARE PROFOUND AND UNIVERSAL....IT WILL STAYON OUR SHELVES AND BE READ AGAIN."THE CHOSEN IS A AN AMAZING BOOK THAT MAKES YOU LOOKAT THINGS IN A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW.I AM ONLY IN THE BEGINNING AND IT IS WONDERFUL.

THE CHOSEN

The Chosen

After knowing that Danny Saunders hit Reuven in the eye with a baseball && shattered his glasses, I would've been furious Reuven is now. The ball has caused great damaged, maybe even leading up to blindness in one eye. I do personally think that Danny Saunders aimed directly at the pitcher (Reuven Malter), all because Reuven caught the all when she was at second base, and he didn't like that. I think Danny Saunders is'nt sorry for anything, but for right now they have a big case on their hands.!!!

How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster

How to Read Literature Like a Professor-Chapter 22: He's Blind for a Reason You Know

What does it mean when an author writes "Can't see a thing in the world. As it turns out , though, he is able to see things in the spirit and divine world?" Perhaps this means that the man is physically oblivious, but yet he can still see. What the man sees only his eyes can witness. Oedipus murdered his father and married his mother. Oedipus blinded himself because he cannot see the truth, which is why he is somatically blind. Tiresias is blind but he can see the truth. People are blind for a reason, those who can see physically may be blinded by something not viewable to the naked eye.

First Post of The Chosen and HTRLLAP

Yesterday, during my reading of "The Chosen", I found something that kept coming up... the color white. I know that Reuven is at a hospital but everything doesn't have to have to be white. I mean the walls could have been a light blue. I also found that Potok used irony by making a blind kid tell Reuven that he needs to be careful with his eyes. After reading "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" I discovered that Chaim Potok is actually trying to say that Reuven is blinded by his anger towards Danny Saunders. I still have to discover what he is trying to say with the color white.

(MY opinion)

In the chapter of How to Read Literature Like a Professor I found it very interesting and mind opening. When people usually see the phrase "blind" in literature they automatically think of some body being physically blind, but the truth is that there is so much more to being "blind" when you think about it. For instance, some one could be emotionally blind, spiritually blind, and so much more. It is important that we be open minded when it come to literature because sometimes even the smartest people over think some things. They go off into some great answer when the answer was so simple to begin with. Now if someone was reading a novel or something and the novel mentioned the word blind, the person who's reading the book just goes, "Oh OK, some body's blind." and just keeps going, but the author could have used a sentence like, "He was blinded with his frustration and anger." If that was the case that meant that the reader was wrong with the sentence he/she said. It truly helped understand literature a little better.
Now in the novel The Chosen I found the beginning of chapter two mind gripping. What I mean by this is that Danny has to go in the hospital and the pain in his eye is so painful it's shooting up and down his body. When I first started reading the chapter I immediately thought that he somehow got glass in his eye from his glasses. The one part that truly had me hooked was the sentence when he said, "How do they get it to change colors like that?" The truth is that the light wasn't changing color and to me that made me think that some thing was seriously wrong with him but I'm glad he did get better. It was truly a fascinating chapter.

You Never Know?

The chosen is a very odd book. I don't understnad the point of it. I have a vague thought that it may have a hidden meaning. Like when Reuven was is the hospital he was was saying he doesn't want to be blind. Maybe they are trying to say he is blinded from the truth

The Chosen

So far in the book The Chosen, there has been alot of hate between the orthadox jews and the Hassidic jews. The orthadox jews are more of a modern type jew, and the Hassidic jews dont like that. there has been alot of hate in this book. During the softball game Danny hit the ball with the bat, the ball hit Reuven's eye. Reuvens friend told him that they were murderers, and he was right cause they probably murdered Reuven's eye sight. Now he's in the hospital because he was wearing glasses at the time he stopped the ball with his eye. I think they should just all get along, because of World War 2.

The Chosen: analyzing

The Chosen is about a boy named Robert Malter who is a modern Jew and a softball player. His father is David Malter and he writes articles on the "Talmud". During the book you notice he has a leadership quality which makes most of the players on his team look up to him. His now known rival Danny Saunders is also a leader on his softball team and his father is a respected leader in both Reuven's (Robert) and Danny's neighborhood though they live a couple of streets away. During a recent softball game in the book Danny plays really "Dirty" and ends up injuring Reuven after calling him an "apikorism". I personally don't know whether it was an accident or on purpose. Now Reuven has a burning hate for Danny Saunders and has a serious injury in his eye.

My feelings about the chosen

I believe that The Chosen is a great book, do to the fact that the chosen builds lots of suspense around the war and how it is affecting Danny's life. Also it uses humor with tragic actions to show the emotional side of each character, and because of this two of our characters are enemies. In addition, The book shows how life is America is being affected by WW2, which is unique because every book i read about WW2 was about the changes in life in Europe. I believe that the religion dispute and characters interactions is all part of the plot due too WW2.

The Chosen~Chapter 2

I don't think Danny Saunders is really sorry for what he did. I think hitting that ball right at Reuven's head was intentional. The smile he had on his face before he hit that ball is proof.

The Chosen ( My Opinion ]

In my opinion about the book : The Chosen was a kinda borning chapter because , it was mainly talking about what Danny saw in the Brookyln Memorial Hospital. One thing the book mentions that he saw was a boy a eleven or maybe a ten year old resting this head on a pillow and it also metioned that a man was smoking a cigarette ( you aren't supose smoke in a hosptail ). Some questions that came to mind while reading the book was " what was Billy and his father talking about " ? because on page 48 it says that " I looked at Billy and saw his father talking quieltly and seriously" ? But over all i didn't really like the chapter that much.

htrllap and the chosen comparison

In the author's writing he states "if you want your audience to know something important about your character(or the work at large),introduce it early, before you need it.
The author means you shouldn't wait until the middle or the end of a story to let the audience know about an important trait of the main Character. You should Know about your main Characters in the beggining of the story. In the book The Chosen, the author Chaim Potok almosts immediatley introduces the characters in the beggining of the story.

What's so good about The Chosen?

Well, I find that the author had caught my eye with how he describes certain aspects of a character. When reading the story I find a clear understanding of what the author is talking about. He stays on a topic the whole way through and doesn't switch from one subject to another. The author has a moral lesson in the second chapter never take your body for gran it. The author made the main character step into somebody else's shoes to get a perspective of how they feel because there blind or has one messed up eye.

First blog

When I was reading How to Read Literature Like a Professor chapter 22. The author was talking about how blind people in literature see different from regular characters. The author said that blind characters can see the world threw the spirits. The begins to talk about a play called Oedipus Rex and he says that blind characters acted different during the play. The author also says that the blind character led them threw the light.

When I was reading chapter 2 of the The Chosen Reuven went to the hostipital with coach Galnter because of his eye. He met Robet Malter and a boy name Billy. He is in the hospital because Danny threw the balll at his eye

The Chosen (Chp2)

In the book i underlined "You get a Purple Heart for today's, work trooper" Mr. Glanter told him. He said that because he played hard baseball today and bruised his heart with hard work instead of his eye.

Reuven's Pain ( The Chosen)

During chapter 2 Reuven was hit with a baseball in his eye. While in the hospital he kept wondering where his father was. I think the author was trying to build up suspense to what Reuven's father had to tell him. Not only that he had glass in his eye and unaware of the surgery that had taken place, but also that his scar tissue could grow. Potentially, he could become blind in his left eye is what I got out of the scar tissue growing. I think the author made a good choice in deciding to place a little blind boy next to Reuven in the hospital. As Reuven sat there watching the boy 'stare', (or what he that was staring)at the ceiling he wondered what it would be like to be blind. The character gained something new if he did not only have it and that would be seeing things in a different perspective. He couldn't see through his left eye because of the bandage that covered it but as he lay there he closed his right eye and knew that if he opened it he would still be able to see. He saw things from a different point of view when he tried to imagine opening his right eye and not being able to see. He then wondered what it must have been like for the little boy who could not see who was right beside him.
