The Minister's Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Minister's Black Veil is about Mr.Hooper, a minister that wears a black veil for "mourning". Many of the townspeople believe that Mr.Hooper wears the veil because he committed a sin but they do not know what the sin is. The sin that Mr.Hooper committed is adultery. On page three during a funeral for a young woman he could not look at the deceased parishioner for unknown reasons. The reason Mr.Hooper could not give the young woman eye contact was because he had an extra-marital relationship with the young woman. Mr Hooper couldn't tell his fiancee why he wore the veil, possibly out of shame. Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of Scarlet Letter which is about an adulteress who has to wear a scarlet A to mark her shame. The character's name is Hester and her husband seeks revenge.
